Wheel Blacks Paralympic Qualifier Tournament - Day Six
Day 6: A Day of Ceremony and Connection 🏉
Day six dawned with a sense of anticipation and excitement as we delved into a day filled with meaningful ceremonies, intense competition, and cherished moments of connection.
The morning commenced with a personal achievement as I tackled the final Open 24.3 CrossFit Games workout—an exhilarating challenge made even more special by the presence of the Hurricanes team, whose support added to the adrenaline-fueled atmosphere.
Following the team breakfast, we embarked on a profoundly moving experience: the Powhiri. Honoured to be recognized as Tangata Whenua, we stood alongside the local iwi on the stage, extending a warm welcome to the participating teams.
Stirring speeches from Cherie Harris, PhD, Harris and the mayor of Upper Hutt set the tone for the event, culminating in the official declaration of the tournament's opening by the Minister for Disability Issues.
A symbolic moment ensued as Jamie Tout CEO of the New Zealand Campus of Innovation and Sport, presented the rope—a powerful representation of the bonds uniting players, teams, staff, officials, and all involved in this monumental event.
Next, we underwent chair checks to ensure compliance with regulations before engaging in a spirited warm-up game against Switzerland.
While victory was a welcome bonus, the true significance lay in our ability to test different lineups and make necessary adjustments—a testament to our strategic prowess and adaptability.
A well-deserved late lunch provided a brief respite before I met with the filming crew for an interview, contributing to a three-part series chronicling our "Road to Qualifying" for the Paralympic Games.
As evening approached, we gathered in the Premier Changing Room to partake in a cherished tradition: the singlet presentation.
With the esteemed presence of Cory Jane, All Blacks legend and Hurricanes assistant coach, each player and staff member received their playing singlet—a moment steeped in pride and camaraderie, shared with our beloved families.
The day concluded with a late dinner and a sense of contentment, as we reflected on the moments of unity, celebration, and determination that defined this remarkable day.
