Understanding Our Funding Model: The Backbone of Disability Sport Auckland's Success

As the CEO of Disability Sport Auckland, I have the privilege of witnessing firsthand the transformative power of sports in the lives of individuals with disabilities. Our mission is to create inclusive sports programmes that empower, inspire, and connect communities. But delivering these programmes requires more than passion and dedication—it requires a robust and diverse funding model. Today, I want to share with you how we secure our funding, what it takes to deliver our incredible programmes, and why your support is essential.

Our Funding Sources

  • Government Support through Sport NZ and the RSTs

The New Zealand Government, through Sport NZ and the RSTs (Harbour Sports, Sport Waitakere, Sport Auckland, CLM Community and Aktive), plays a crucial role in our funding ecosystem. This support is foundational, providing us with the resources to develop and implement initiatives that promote inclusivity in sports. Government funding ensures we can maintain our baseline operations and reach a wide audience.

  • Level 4 Grants

Level 4 grants are another significant pillar of our funding strategy. These grants, allow us to deliver innovative programmes and expand our reach. They enable us to introduce new sports, enhance existing activities, and provide specialised training for our coaches and volunteers.

  • Donations

Donations from generous individuals are the heart and soul of our organisation. Every dollar donated goes directly into enhancing our programmes, purchasing equipment, and supporting athletes. It's the individual contributions that often make the most immediate and visible impact, allowing us to react quickly to the needs of our community.

  • Sponsorships

Partnerships with businesses and organisations are vital. Sponsors not only provide financial support but also help us raise awareness about our cause. Through these collaborations, we can host large events, provide scholarships to athletes, and invest in community outreach.

What It Takes to Deliver Our Programmes

Creating and delivering our programmes involves meticulous planning, dedicated staff, and substantial resources. Here’s a glimpse into what it takes:

  • Qualified Personnel

Our team comprises skilled coaches, support staff, and volunteers who are trained to work with individuals with disabilities. Their expertise and passion are fundamental to delivering safe, effective, and enjoyable experiences.

  • Specialised Equipment

Many of our sports require specialised equipment adapted for various disabilities. From wheelchairs designed for basketball to assistive technology for visually impaired athletes, these tools are essential but often costly.

  • Facility Rentals and Maintenance

Access to quality facilities is crucial. We rent spaces for our programmes and ensure they are accessible and safe for all participants. Regular maintenance and adaptations are part of our ongoing expenses.

  • Programme Development

Developing new programmes and continuously improving existing ones requires ongoing research, training, and feedback loops. We invest in understanding the latest best practices and tailoring our offerings to meet the evolving needs of our community.

  • Community Outreach and Advocacy

Raising awareness about the importance of inclusive sports and advocating for the rights of individuals with disabilities are integral to our mission. This involves running campaigns, hosting events, and engaging with policymakers and the public.
